Boston issues RFI on role of AI in permitting
The request for information is being issued by City of Boston’s Department of Innovation and Technology, Inspectional Services Department and Fire Department
The City of Boston is issuing a request for information (RFI) to help gain a better understanding of the role artificial intelligence (AI) can play in the permitting process.
The deadline is Friday 16 May. The City makes clear in its statement that this RFI is for informational purposes only and a response to the RFI – or lack thereof – will have no impact on the award of any future contracts.
Scoping and compliance tools
The City of Boston’s Department of Innovation and Technology, Inspectional Services Department and Fire Department are interested in learning about any plan review, project scoping, and code compliance education tools that could speed up permitting and improve the experience for applicants and city staff.
They are specifically interested in “pre-check” solutions that lead to higher quality submissions, and “co-pilot” solutions that reduce toil for city staff. The City also wants to understand how solutions can be integrated into the low-code application platform it will use to manage permit applications and issue permits in the future.

“We are interested in written submissions that outline such solutions and their cost structures. We also welcome any information you can share about the structure and approach you have taken to piloting the solution in other municipalities, and the methods you used to evaluate the pilot,” said the City.
City of Boston is specifically interested in “pre-check” solutions that lead to higher quality submissions, and “co-pilot” solutions that reduce toil for city staff.
“Lastly we would love to hear a bit about how you see evolutions in large language model (LLM)/machine learning model abilities impacting the evolution of your solution.”
