Cisco augments Tetration Analytics package with security enforcement

Tech giant is also offering a smaller-scale platform aimed at deployments of up to 1,000 workloads

Cisco has unveiled a second release of its Tetration Analytics package with features such as a smaller footprint and a cloud service that it reckons will go some way towards making the system more relevant to data centre customers.

Announced in June 2016, Tetration Analytics is intended as a turnkey analytics solution that gathers information from hardware and software sensors and analyses the information using Big Data and machine learning.

Building on the package’s original discovery and visibility capabilities, Cisco claims its latest software provides the industry’s first “consistent security policy enforcement” applied holistically across each application.

Policy is enforced regardless of where the application resides: virtual, bare metal, physical servers, or in private or public clouds, across any vendor’s infrastructure. This new enforcement model binds policies to workload characteristics and behaviours while ensuring that the policy stays intact even as the workload moves, the tech giant said.

“As one of the nation’s largest providers of post-acute healthcare services, HealthSouth is deploying Cisco ACI in multiple data centres as well as Cisco Tetration Analytics to increase our agility, provide better service and lay a solid foundation for the future” said Mike Kindle, VP of technology services, HealthSouth, commenting as a user of the updated release.

“We will utilise Cisco data centre solutions to quickly deploy virtualised services with a single pane of glass view, providing a high level of security and reliability. Cisco Tetration Analytics is helping us identify and move application workloads in ways we couldn’t before,” he added.

Tetration software sensors support Linux and Windows server hosts, while hardware sensors are embedded in Cisco network switch ASICS: Nexus 9200, Nexus 9300-EX and Nexus 9500-EX, to collect flow data at line rate from all the ports. Per Cisco once in place, the Tetration platform learns its enterprise environment and any policies IT has in place. From there it can learn which applications are dependent on each other throughout their data centre and into the cloud. It can monitor server behaviour patterns and group servers more efficiently.

Cisco also announced it is delivering two deployment models for Tetration Analytics. In addition to the original large scale platform, it is offering a smaller-scale platform, Tetration-M, aimed at deployments of up to 1,000 workloads.
