Nokia is installing an internet protocol/multiprotocol label switching (IP/MPLS) network to digitalise and automate the management of the Finnish power grid.
Through the new smart grid, Fingrid, Finland’s nationwide power grid operator, aims to better integrate variable renewables such as solar, wind and micro-generation from bioenergy.
The Nokia network will also support all current and legacy grid control applications including SCADA, tele-protection and current differential protection.
Nokia’s IP/MPLS solution plays an important role in the digital transformation of our distributed energy resource management.

Finland’s power transmission network is constantly being upgraded in order to meet changing energy requirements. Solar and wind generation, for example, need a much more agile and automated grid to manage the variable, two-way power flows. Inputs and outputs must be automatically ramped and balanced. New distributed energy resource management systems need reliable, secure communications systems to monitor, control, coordinate and manage distributed energy assets.
