The Spanish island of Mallorca can monitor water levels and air quality in real-time as well as benefit from other smart applications following the incorporation of Semtech LoRa devices and wireless frequency technology into its LoRaWAN-based network. The island is a member of the EU Smart Islands Initiative.

Semtech worked with IOTLabs, which provided the island-wide network and whose model is based on the Internet-of-Things- (IoT-) as-a-service principle which allows organisations of any size to access the benefits of the IoT.

Backbone of the IoT platform

“LoRa Technology provides the backbone for an IoT platform and opportunities to create endless possible smart applications,” said Marta Cierra, co-founder of IOTLABS. “The citizens of Mallorca will utilise the network based on the LoRaWAN protocol for a number of smarter applications such as real-time water level and air quality monitoring. In the near future, we expect to add smart parking, traffic, and pollution monitoring solutions using LoRa-based sensors.”

IOTLABS’ LoRa-based solution enables real time connectivity, monitoring, and data analytics. This allows the municipality to better provide more complex smart solutions like smart metering for utilities, and precision agriculture solutions for the island’s olive industry.

“The flexible, scalable, and easy-to-deploy capabilities of LoRa Technology play an important role in creating a smarter planet, and Mallorca is a prime example”

LoRa-based solutions can easily be implemented into pre-existing networks with minimal deployment cost, and solutions are scalable by number of nodes and gateways. This allows networks to grow from town, to countryside, and eventually entire islands.

Semtech’s LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology is a widely adopted long-range, low-power solution for IoT that gives telecom companies, IoT application makers and system integrators the feature set necessary to deploy low-cost, interoperable IoT networks, gateways, sensors, module products, and IoT services worldwide. IoT networks based on the LoRaWAN specification have been deployed in over 100 countries and Semtech is a founding member of the LoRa Alliance.

“The flexible, scalable, and easy-to-deploy capabilities of LoRa Technology play an important role in creating a smarter planet, and Mallorca is a prime example,” said Vivek Mohan, director of IoT, wireless and sensing products group at Semtech.
