The city of Manhattan Beach in California is migrating to digital management of its electrical infrastructure for city-run facilities with the implementation of SmartCSM software.

It is the first city in the US to implement the software and, in doing so, will ensure that its team has the most recent and up-to-date data available on its facilities when it is needed. SmartCSM’s software also provides the city with a more streamlined, organised, and easy-to-read online data system.

SmartCSM is a cloud-based software platform that digitally maps and manages the electrical infrastructure of commercial, industrial, and multi dwelling unit buildings. It has been created by electricians for electricians.

Manhattan Beach’s transition has begun with police and fire departments and will extend to its other city-run facilities. In addition to organising and digitally mapping electrical infrastructure, the city’s facility managers also needed a way to instantly access their technicians’ data.

"It’s critical that my field technicians get data quickly and that I have a bird’s eye view of what they are doing. And SmartCSM allows us to do that,” said Sean Roberts, facility supervisor of Manhattan Beach.

He added: “We have an incredible volume of paper data to manage and, as a progressive city, we are looking to the future by instituting changes and embracing technologies that will save us time, money, and keep our employees safe.”

The city’s move to user-friendly, digital software has already made it easier for its technical people to locate key electrical documentation, reducing their time in the field by as much as 30-40 per cent. By streamlining technicians’ workflow and cutting back on unnecessary hours on the job, SmartCSM’s software has improved the city’s overall efficiency.

“Cities are complex businesses and entities to run,” said Craig Caryl, CEO of SmartCSM. “Our software simplifies and accelerates how they manage, access, and respond to operational issues as they arise in a fraction of the time it used to take.”

SmartCSM aims to pave the way for large organisations to transition to one digital data management platform for their building’s infrastructure. The software allows building owners and facility managers to vastly reduce operational waste, increase accountability, and reduce risk while making their buildings smarter.
