DOdata will use data to create smart city solutions for Dortmund.
The City of Dortmund will co-manage a new data hub company set up by local energy utility DEW21.
DOdata has been created to enable the combination, analysis and linkage of non-personal data to create smart city solutions which will benefit citizens and the local economy.
The City of Dortmund stressed that municipal oversight is key. A wholly owned subsidiary of DEW21, DOdata will be jointly managed by Dr Jan Fritz Rettberg, head of chief information & innovation Office, City of Dortmund, and Sven Baumgarte, head of strategy and transformation, DEW21.

DOdata will work closely with the city to build on existing services and create new ones in areas such as intelligent parking management, supply line leakage detection and air quality measurement.
Heike Heim, chairman of the DEW21 executive board, said: "Data literacy [is an] essential building block of our business strategy, and the founding of DOdata is another important step in our evolution from a traditional energy and water utility to a modern utility.
Dortmund’s mayor, Ullrich Sierau, commented: "I am delighted that we have created a centre of excellence for urban data management in our city, DOdata, which marks an important milestone on the way to becoming [a smart city]."
He added: “DOdata thrives on the ability to combine, network and analyse data generated in different ways and enriched by other sources in order to derive solutions for various fields of application."
DEW21 said through the data hub approach, it successfully launched applications for the recent Digital Summit event at Dortmund’s Westfalenhallen venue. These included tools for the intelligent management of disabled parking spaces at the exhibition centre and intelligent waste management in the exhibition halls.

"Our shareholders have supported us in founding the new company right from the start, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them once again. This is the only way we have been able to implement the first applications for Dortmund’s Westfalenhallen at the Digital Summit,” said Heim.
DEW21 is an original member of Allianz Smart City Dortmund. The collaborative group of private and public sector organisations and academia was set up in 2016 to help Dortmund become smarter.
