Google cars measure Copenhagen air pollution

It is the first city outside of the US where Google will conduct this kind of air pollution measurement

Copenhagen Solutions Lab is working with Google to measure air pollution in the Danish capital street-by-street.

Today, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency measures air pollution at three locations in the city. Google’s Street View cars will drive throughout the city with air metering equipment, giving new insight into the extent of local air pollution. Its measurements will complement current measurements of NOx and particles.

Copenhagen is the first city outside of the United States where Google is conducting this type of air pollution measurement. All air data will be made available to the city of Copenhagen and relevant knowledge institutions.

Copenhagen Solutions Lab is part of the Technical and Environmental Administration in Copenhagen Municipality. It is hoped that the partnership will create new opportunities for emissions and particulate pollution initiatives.

Last month Copenhagen City Council almost unanimously decided to adopt a proposal to increase the measurements of the city’s air quality in addition to state standards.

This will increase data usage so as to improve citizens’ knowledge and provide a better chance of dealing with pollution.

The content of the proposal included:

  • an annual survey of the health consequences of air pollution in Copenhagen. This happens through cooperation between Health and Care Administration and Technical and Environmental Administration
  • air pollution data must be available to the citizens of Copenhagen through a municipal website, with real-time measurements of NO2 particle gauges
  • the gauges must fulfil the air quality directive criteria for NO2 measurement and will be placed along HC Andersens Boulevard and other specially selected locations in Copenhagen, where pollution from (diesel) cars and other sources of pollution is considered to be particularly high and harmful to health.

Google has been using its Street View Cars to map air quality since 2014 as part of its Google Earth Outreach work.
