Populus helps global cities manage flexible street policies for reopening

Platform allows cities to identify temporary or permanent street policies, communicate them to the general public, and digitally provide up-to-date information to key mobility stakeholders.

Populus, a transportation and mobility services management platform, has announced expanded partnerships with several cities from around the world to deliver digital solutions that will help inform their street and kerb policies for “reopening their economies”.

 

The US National Association of City Transportation Official has recently released guidance for cities on how they can adapt to manage streets as coronavirus-related policies continue to change from day to day.

 

New street policies

 

According to Populus, its Street Manager solution can be used to create and communicate new street policies to meet “ever-evolving” street needs, including adding new bike lanes, outdoor dining, and kerb loading zones.

 

The company claims more than a dozen cities from a wide variety of geographies have deployed its expanded platform, including New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Orlando, São José dos Campos, Baltimore, and Boston.

 

“Cities of all sizes are grappling with how to best manage access to public spaces that can be shared safely,” said Regina Clewlow, co-founder and CEO of Populus.

 

“The ability for transportation officials to dynamically manage and communicate changes about how their streets should be used is increasingly important as policies change on a day-to-day basis in response to Covid.”

 

Populus said its technology suite allows cities to identify temporary or permanent street policies, communicate them to the general public, and digitally provide up-to-date information to key mobility stakeholders such as mapping platforms and delivery services.

Street Manager can also be used alongside Populus’ mobility management solutions which help city transportation authorities securely receive and analyse data from mobility fleets, such as shared scooters, mopeds, and cars, to support data-driven transportation policy and planning.

 

The platform supports complex kerbside pricing policies for mobility fleets, such as car-sharing.

 

“Pittsburgh has a variety of needs when it comes to communicating new street policies, ranging from new curb loading zones to streets that prioritise bikes and pedestrians,” added Tosh Chambers, policy analyst and programme manager, the City of Pittsburgh.

 

“Populus provides us with digital solutions that make it easier to update and communicate these policies broadly.”
