San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has awarded a $6.9m contract to smart mobility infrastructure management company Iteris to provide services for two operations centres.

Iteris provides multi-modal traveller information services for 11 state and regional transportation agencies across the US via its ClearMobility platform, which has supported more than 63 million combined interactions and seven million individual interactive voice response phone calls in the past year alone.

Staffing and management

Under the terms of the three-year agreement, Iteris will provide staffing and management services to the 511 Operations Centre in Oakland, California, that is responsible for collecting, curating and disseminating traffic and transit information for the nine-county Bay Area region.

The 511 Operations Centre staff disseminate transportation information through the 511 SF Bay traveller information system, of which the 511 phone and transit data systems have been managed by Iteris since 2015.

“MTC is committed to using technology to make the San Francisco Bay Area transportation network safer, more efficient and easier to navigate for our region’s travellers”

Iteris will also provide staffing and management services to the Regional Operations Centre in San Francisco to monitor traffic and toll collection systems along the MTC-operated express lanes and help maximise mobility through congestion management and coordinated incident response.

“MTC is committed to using technology to make the San Francisco Bay Area transportation network safer, more efficient and easier to navigate for our region’s travellers,” said Andrew Fremier, deputy executive director at MTC.

He added: “We look forward to continuing working with Iteris to ensure that San Francisco Bay Area travellers and public transit riders, as well as emergency responders have accurate, real-time travel information around the clock via the 511 SF Bay traveller information system.”

The contract includes an option to extend for an additional four years.

Last month, Iteris was awarded a $4.7m contract for a regional traffic signal synchronisation project by Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA).

The three-year project includes signal coordination and timing improvements, with the aim of improving traffic flow, enhancing public safety and decreasing stops.
