PlacePod is a smart parking sensor for off-street, on-street, municipal and private parking management
Sigfox USA has joined forces with PNI Sensor to introduce a low power wide area network (LPWAN) parking solution in the US.
The PlacePod is an industrialised IoT-enabled smart parking sensor aimed at on-street, off-street, municipal, and private parking management which offers real-time vehicle detection and location of available parking spaces.
According to the partners, unlike other magnetic sensor-based parking sensors, PlacePod accurately detects parking events in dense urban environments and filters out magnetic interference from underground trains, passing traffic, and overhead power lines which can trigger false parking events.
The smart parking sensor has an extremely long battery life, allowing for smart cities, universities, parking companies, and facilities to harness the benefits and make data-driven decisions over long periods of time.
As a result, Sigfox claims parking managers and city planners can use the solution to help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, improve urban mobility, and increase parking revenue by making parking enforcement more efficient.
The North America network operator for connectivity provider Sigfox said the partnership is part of its expanding ecosystem to better serve the needs of the US market.
Sigfox has existing network coverage in the top 24 US metros, including the cities Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City.
Sigfox’s network is present in 45 countries and on track to cover 60 by 2018. Founded in 2010 by Ludovic Le Moan and Christophe Fourtet, the company is headquartered in Labège near Toulouse, France’s “IoT valley”.
