The Tampa Electric Company is working with Itron to deploy a smart lighting solution which can also serve as the foundation for future smart city applications
The Tampa Electric Company in Florida is deploying Itron’s smart street lighting solution to allow streetlights to communicate with the utility.
In line with the utility’s streetlight replacement programme to convert traditional lighting infrastructure to energy-efficient LED technology, Tampa Electric will install more than 260,000 Itron smart photocells in the next five years.
This project will reduce field mobilisation and provide immediate detection of a light outage allowing for a prompt response to support roadway safety and crime reduction while also benefiting the environment.
Tampa Electric will be able to remotely control streetlight fixtures using advanced capabilities, such as dynamic dimming. With Itron’s network, Tampa Electric also has a foundation to enable distribution automation and smart city applications, such as air quality management or smart parking.
“The utility will have a foundation to support multiple smart utility and city applications both today and tomorrow,” said Sharelynn Moore, senior vice president of networked solutions at Itron.
Itron has also announced that its Bridge 5-WS is one of the first products to receive Wi-SUN Field Area Network (FAN) 1.0 certification. The standard enables different industrial devices to interconnect onto common, secure, industrial-grade networks.
The certification of the Itron device, with integrated Gen5 NIC hardware, indicates the Itron Network platform is capable of supporting the Wi-SUN FAN 1.0 specification. This NIC can be used in many different devices in an industrial IoT network.
It is granted by the alliance to products based on their compliance to the FAN communications profile and their ability to interoperate with other Wi-SUN FAN certified products, as verified by an independent third-party testing laboratory.
