China launches blockchain-based smart city ID system for interoperability

China has launched a blockchain-based smart city identification system to support interoperability between infrastructure, data and cities.

 

The City IDcode Identification System was launched by the Chinese Urban Development Research Association, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Zhongguancun Industry & Information Research Institute of Two-dimensional Code Technology (ZIIOT) and the Global Urban Smart Engineering Technology Research (Beijing) Centre.

 

The City IDcode Identification System is based on what the organisations say is “the first global top-level MA node code in China”.

 

The system, developed, distributed and managed in China, is based on blockchain technology and underpinned by unified issuing rules, distributed storage analysis and ‘tamper-proof’ security.

 

The organisations say that until now, coding systems have not been uniform, data is not interoperable and applications can’t interoperate between different departments and industries, and that these factors limit the expansion and effectiveness of smart city initiatives.

 

The new system aims to support interconnectivity and data-sharing between systems and cities.

 

How it works

 

The City IDcode Identification System is based on what the organisations say is “the first global top-level MA node code in China” and has been developed in accordance with the ISO/IEC 15459 international standard.

 

Each city, department and piece of infrastructure will be assigned a unique global digital identification code.

 

For example, the city code of Shijiazhuang is MA.156.1301. The Shijiazhuang urban management bureau identification code is MA.156.1301.01, and the traffic management department identification code is MA.156.1301.02.

 

The traffic light managed by traffic department is MA.156.1301.02/3655010401, and the automatic signal at the intersection is MA.156.1301.02/ 3655010403. An individual automatic signal device at the intersection is MA.156.1301.02/3655010403/1212, etc.

 

Next steps include the creation of a city code issuing agency, a smart city code issuing management service platform and promotion of the city code in China.

 

A statement said: “The application of IDcode realises the unification and standardisation of the identification codes of various elements of the city from the ‘root’ so as to effectively promote the solution [to] many problems, such as the disunity of the identification of various industries in the city, the incompatibility of applications and the difficulty of data-sharing. [It will] accelerate the construction of smart cities.”

 

Next steps

 

The China Research Society of Urban Development, the Global Urban Smart Engineering Technology Research (Beijing) Centre and ZIIOT will jointly set up a city code issuing agency, create a smart city code issuing management service platform and promote adoption of the city code.

 

The City IDcode Identification System was launched at the 2019 China Urban Innovation and Development Forum and 36th Annual Meeting of China Research Society of Urban Development (short for CRSUD), held recently in Shijianzhuang, Hebei Province.
