The autonomous aerial vehicle technology platform company is partnering with architecture firm Giancarlo Zema Design Group to help extend its air mobility solutions in Europe.
Autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) technology platform company Ehang is partnering with Rome-based architecture firm Giancarlo Zema Design Group (GZDG) to build an eco-sustainable vertiport in Italy.
The vertiport will use green design and construction materials and can generate energy to recharge the EH216 passenger-grade AAVs.
Vertiports will play a significant role in the urban air mobility (UAM) market and the new era of flight. When integrated into the existing transportation infrastructure, vertiports can serve as aerial hubs for tourists. The vertiport in Italy will help Ehang extend its air mobility solutions in Europe.
The design of the vertiport is Inspired by the native African tree Baobab. It comprises a 30-metre-high tower, with a steel and laminated wood structure, a waiting room, a café, a 200-square metre panoramic restaurant and connecting lift. The take off-and-landing platform will be set on the roof terrace.
The vertiport is built with non-slip photovoltaic panels that can generate over 300 KW of electric power per day. The platform will have fully independent plug-and-play charging infrastructures that can be used to recharge Ehang’s AAVs.
Ehang and GZDG aim to use the vertiport to enter the emerging global eco-tourism sector, with multiple projects being planned in Europe and Southeast Asia.
In November 2020, Ehang announced that its two-seater air taxi had completed its maiden flights in the Republic of Korea. It said the flight tours across Seoul, Daegu, and Jeju Island signify the starting point to explore the UAM market in South Korea.
The company is also part of a consortium of companies set up earlier this year to trial a range of smart city air mobility services over the next two years in several cities across Europe.
Amu-Led, a newly created Single European Sky ATM Research (Sesar) U-space demonstration project, aims to demonstrate the safe integration of all types of drone operations including air taxis, cargo delivery drones or unmanned systems in support of emergencies in urban environments to realise sustainable, smart cities.
