Western Power, the government-owned utility in the south west of Western Australia, is deploying Itron’s standards-based network technology, connecting nearly 240,000 electricity meters to improve efficiency, reliability and customer service.
The Western Power Network forms the vast majority of the South West Interconnected Network (SWIN), which together with all of the electricity generators, comprises the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).
With Itron’s solution, Western Power will enhance visibility into the operation of its electricity distribution network, which will enable automated data collection, new remote services and the ability to proactively monitor faults and outages.
The solution will also enable Western Power to better manage distributed energy resources, including rooftop solar systems and battery storage. There are approximately 250,000 solar panel installations connected to the Western Power grid. The company is also running a number of microgrid and battery storage projects, including community ones.
