Described as a reimagined form of urban transport, Civilized claims its Model 1 e-bike is also a credible alternative to the second car or moped and can carry cargo.
A premium e-bike equipped with automated air ride technology has been unveiled by Civilized Cycles. The maker claims “Model 1” is the world’s first e-bike with self-levelling air suspension that allows passengers and cargo to glide over any terrain “while floating on air”.
Described as a reimagined form of urban transport that provides a safe, green, and affordable way of getting around, Civilized claims its Model 1 e-bike is also a credible alternative to the second car or moped.
The Model 1 takes design cues from across the two-wheel world with a shaped lightweight “step through” frame that accommodates two passengers and panniers that expand to carry fully-loaded grocery bags.
“We are excited to begin sales of the Model 1 and are eager to show that for local transportation, our greener future isn’t a sacrifice, it’s an upgrade.” said Zachary Schieffelin, founder and CEO of Civilized Cycles. “All of us have people and stuff in our lives, so our bikes are designed from the ground up to accommodate both.”
Model 1 seeks to blend the functionality of a cargo bike with flexibility of a passenger cycle. The lightweight forged and hydroformed aluminium frame features a low step through shape for easy boarding access regardless of clothing or hip mobility, and with or without passengers.
The e-bike is the first bike to offer an automated self-levelling suspension, providing a level of comfort and safety not yet seen in e-bikes, Civilized claims. The patented system works by using an onboard compressor, air spring, and some clever sensing and control logic that adjusts to the weight of passengers and cargo. Any time the weight varies significantly, (like a passenger gets on or off), a push of a button will reset the suspension to its optimal function.
Civilized reports the result of this technology is an extremely smooth and confident ride comparable to that of a car – the e-bike glides over any terrain with its suspension soaking up bumps and uneven roads and pathways.

Rear expandable panniers can accommodate up to 50lbs of cargo, with space for up to four full grocery bags or personal items like safety helmets, ride apparel, lock or a spare battery. Composed of a composite of ABS and ballistic nylon materials, the panniers magnetically hold shut, and are water resistant and lockable.
Model 1 also comes with onboard and online intelligence. Its onboard display provides journey data including speed, trip odometer, range remaining, battery charge level and a Pin feature for added security. In addition, the accompanying app (not available at time of publication) allows the bike to be locked/unlocked via Bluetooth, tracks metrics and CSI data over time, undertakes ongoing diagnostics and controls the bike’s settings including five different power and speed modes.
Preorder sales are underway at an early bird price of $4,499 with delivery slated for the end of 2021.
