Swedish municipality deploys robots for safer recruitment

The Upplands-Bro municipality outside of Stockholm is using artificial intelligence recruitment robots to reduce the risk of contamination at the interview stage during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Upplands-Bro municipality in Sweden is using artificial intelligence robots to interview potential new recruits in a safe environment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

The municipality, located just outside Stockholm, is facing new recruitment challenges because of the pandemic, especially in its substitute pool for care and welfare positions.

 

Last year, it became the first organisation in the world to use the Tengai recruitment robot when it hired a strategic digital coordinator.

 

Eliminating bias

 

Tengai conducts data-driven automatic interviews, which also claim to eliminate bias by removing human influence. It also claims to be able to deliver seven times more interviews than a human recruiter. Organisations can lease the robots to conduct interviews at their preferred location.

 

Upplands-Bro will use the latest version of Tengai which is validated by psychometric experts. The robots are designed to provide candidate assessments to support hiring decisions and increase overall efficiency and will be in place from 11 May.

 

“Because of the global corona crisis, we need to secure our access to competent personnel, for instance in elderly care,” said Havva Ilhan, deputy head of human resources at UpplandsBro municipality.

 

“Using the Tengai robot, I believe that we can meet this challenge in an effective way. I’m looking forward to starting the process and it’s exciting knowing we will have the robot available to start interviewing very soon.”

She continues: “When it comes to the interview, I haven’t found another solution on the market that can ensure a completely bias-free process, which is something we continue to strive for at Upplands-Bro. By using robot interviews we have successfully been able to upgrade our recruitment process to be focused on competency.”

 

Elin Öberg Mårtenzon, CEO at Tengai, explained that the interviews are completely automated and this will help the HR department meet their high expectations when it comes to efficiency and objectivity.

 

Mårtenzon added: “It’s great to see the interest from the public sector and the Upplands-Bro municipality is really an innovative client.

 

“It feels good to be able to help and support them through challenging processes. During these critical times, we want to do everything we can to support the care and welfare sector by ensuring a safe environment for both recruiters and candidates.”

 

Tengai is a Stockholm-based HR Tech start-up. The robot was originally a collaboration between recruitment and staffing agency TNG, which programmed the diversity and inclusion software at the TNGx innovation lab, and Furhat Robotics, which built the robotics platform and OS.
