Through its in-house Digital Greenwich team and multi-disciplinary urban innovation company, DG Cities, Greenwich is striving to become London’s smartest, most resilient borough.

Allan Mayo, Smart City Strategist, Digital Greenwich, told SmartCitiesWorld Greenwich is focused on: “Becoming more adaptable to the changes that are taking place in terms of technology, the computerisation of services and industry and AI coming in, but also being adaptable to global warming and more resource-efficient as a borough,” especially in the light of tightening budgets.

Digital connectivity underpins the new digital economy

“Digital technology is the way to do it,” he said. “Our ambitions for Greenwich are to make it the most adaptable, most resilient borough the smartest borough – in London.

Connectivity underpins all of this.

“Digital connectivity underpins the new digital economy,” Mayo said. “Without ultra-fast broadband and fibre into the premises, and without the move from 3g to 4g to 5g, we’re not going to be adaptable.

"Our connectivity strategy is fundamentally about giving Greenwich advanced capability through ultra-fast broadband and excellent mobile services, which businesses and residents now demand.”

Brave new world

This requires traditional partners and partnerships to evolve too.

“Telcos are having to adapt to this brave new world, just as cities are,” Mayo commented. “I think we need to have a conversation with telcos, and with other players in this space, to see how we can capitalise on this new infrastructure and help them adjust to this new world [alongside] ourselves.”

He said in-depth discussion is required about “relative roles, real opportunities, who does what, and what the business models are.”
