Transport emissions remain one of the hardest challenges for cities, requiring coordinated action across public mobility, freight, infrastructure and urban planning. This session explores how cities can move from ambition to execution by improving operational visibility into how mobility systems actually function. Anders examines the increasingly central role that telematics, evolved far beyond fleet management, now plays as a city-wide data layer enabling more precise, real-time decisions.

Drawing on examples from the Nordics and Baltics, the session highlights how real-world movement data can reveal hidden patterns in behaviour, challenge planning assumptions, and identify where emissions are truly concentrated. It will also explore how cities can prioritise targeted interventions, better align electrification with actual demand, and move from fragmented optimisation toward more coordinated, equitable urban mobility systems.

Key talking points:

  • How telematics is becoming critical data infrastructure for real-time urban mobility, visibility and decision-making
  • Why the fastest path to decarbonisation is not broad action, but targeted, data-driven interventions
  • How cities can prioritise electrification based on actual usage patterns and system impact
  • Why coordination across fragmented mobility systems is essential to reducing inefficiencies and emissions
  • How data can both optimise systems and reveal equity gaps, and how it shapes outcomes and bias
