Limerick is rewriting what public transport can look like in a mid-sized European city. Under Ireland’s first directly elected Mayor, the city is moving decisively from fixed-route, underutilised bus networks toward smart, demand-responsive services that meet residents where they are. Reducing car dependency, cutting emissions and demonstrating that green mobility is not the preserve of major capitals. This session puts Mayor John Moran in conversation to explore how Limerick is building a transport system fit for a net-zero future: the decisions made, the partnerships forged, and the lessons that cities of every size can take home.

Key talking points:

  • How Limerick is transforming conventional bus services into demand-responsive, data-driven mobility solutions that improve coverage, reduce empty running and cut emissions across the network
  • The governance model, building the partnerships and the political leadership behind Limerick’s green mobility agenda, and what Ireland’s first directly elected mayoral structure has made possible that wasn’t possible before
  • Integrating active travel, electrified public transport and shared mobility into a coherent, city-wide movement strategy that reduces car dependency without leaving communities behind
  • What mid-sized and secondary cities globally can learn from Limerick’s approach: scaling smart mobility innovation without the budgets or infrastructure of a major capital
