Fibre programme expands into Alabama’s Birmingham Metro area
Provider Lumos will lay more than 1,300 miles of fibre, providing high-speed internet to underserved communities as well as support Alabama’s economic growth.
Fibre-optic internet and wifi service provider Lumos has announced its expansion into Alabama, its sixth state of operation.
The investment aligns with Alabama’s commitment to expanding broadband access and creating economic growth, workforce development and digital opportunities.
Fibre to underserved communities
Lumos will lay more than 1,300 miles of fibre, providing high-speed internet to underserved communities and families throughout the Birmingham Metro area.
Lumos said the fibre internet will provide residents and the community access to new job opportunities, support for entrepreneurs starting businesses, and enhanced digital skills and online learning. For college-bound students, it also means easier access to college applications and financial aid resources.
“Lumos’ investment in the Birmingham community reflects our mission to empower communities,” said Lumos CEO, Brian Stading. “Our goal is to create a lasting impact across Alabama. Fibre-optic infrastructure isn’t just about internet speeds; it’s about enabling opportunities for telemedicine, remote working, learning, and smart city innovation.”

The expansion will also help to solidify the Birmingham community as a competitive economic hub, attracting new businesses and industries reliant on robust digital infrastructure, such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Lumos will be the first fibre provider to families, households and businesses in portions of the Birmingham market. This infrastructure will deliver next-generation 100 per cent fibre-optic Internet to key cities and communities, including but not limited to: Jefferson County, the City of Birmingham, Irondale, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills and the City of Hoover.

The City Council of Hoover unanimously approved Lumos’ franchise agreement to begin construction.
“We welcome Lumos to our city,” said Hoover mayor Frank Brocato. “We are always in favour of our residents having more options when it comes to internet providers, making Hoover a more connected city.”
In addition to delivering ultra-fast internet, Lumos brings job opportunities to Jefferson County, supporting local economic growth.
Engineering work for the expansion is underway, and construction will begin soon, reports Lumos, which provides services across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and has recently announced expansion plans in Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois.
