‘Smart forest’ initiative launched in Lebanon

The Smart Forest solution is being used in seven forests in Lebanon and could be rolled out across others in the country in the face of a severe crisis.

App development company Eurisko Mobility has developed a tool which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor and protect forests.

 

Launched in partnership with the Cedar International Festival, the Smart Forest solution is being used in seven forests in Lebanon and could be rolled out across others in the country in the face of a severe crisis.

 

In addition to forest coverage shrinking due to insect infestation and other issues which have been linked to climate change, Lebanon has recently experienced some of its worst wildfires in decades, amid a heatwave and strong winds.

 

Nature-focused tech

 

Eurisko Mobility’s Smart Forest solution uses AI and machine learning to understand the specific natural characteristics of individual forests. Data helps to predict fire risks as well as flagging fires induced by non-natural factors via ‘outlier detection’.

 

Through an interactive dashboard, the system enables comparison of historical metrics with real-time information related to air and soil temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and wind speed, as well as CO2 emissions.

 

Automatic alerts are triggered by an increase in fire risk or emissions. This can include emails, SMS, push notifications and automated phone calls to response bodies such as civil defence organisations, municipalities or NGOs.

 

A statement from Eurisko Mobility said: “Traditional solutions are becoming obsolete as they are built on static mathematical formulas, exclude the specific natural characteristics of the forest in question, and provide fluctuating prediction accuracy when applied to different types of forests in different areas of the world.”

It added: “For this country-wide scale project, a clear route map has been set: data collection, preparation and processing to select optimal AI/machine learning models for each forest [and] a centralised system linking all forests together."

 

Drone integration

 

In future, the system will be integrated with drones to dispatch real-time photos and geographic coordinates of fires.

 

Eurisko Mobility is sponsoring the development, deployment and maintenance of the Smart Forest software in seven forests which were worst affected by the recent fires.

 

CTO, Ziad Tawk, told SmartCitiesWorld his company has also offered the system free of charge to the Lebanese government to roll out across remaining forests.
