Dubai’s Road Transport Authority (RTA) is implementing a ‘smart time management system’ to reduce waiting times at event sites during exhibitions and conferences.
The Smart Time Management System allows the RTA to understand the number of visitors travelling to such events, and deploy the right amount of transport and taxis. It also enables the agency to inform passengers how many vehicles are available and the anticipated waiting time.
The system consists of screens at the beginning, middle and end of the waiting queue, a device to determine the number of visitors and the type of service at the beginning of the queue, a customer satisfaction survey, the main server for computers, and cameras to read the taxi plates at the entrance and exit of the event site.
The system also includes a Mobile Smart Event Control Unit vehicle equipped with advanced surveillance cameras, and two offices to co-ordinate all the agencies involved in providing transport and transport information.
How the service came about
There are over 500 events in Dubai every year. An RTA team first visited event venues in Dubai to understand some of the challenges. They then conducted a wider study of venues to look at the issues around ordering taxis.
The system has been tested during two large events held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The RTA reports that the trials showed a drop in waiting times for taxi riders and an increase in customer satisfaction ratings.
