Municipality of Genoa – bridging history and innovation

Genoa is preserving its UNESCO-listed heritage while modernising urban infrastructure through the "OverUnderGround" project. Led by the Municipality of Genoa, this initiative is supported by the national Competence Centre START 4.0 and Hexagon, together putting to the system advanced technologies such as georadar, BIM, and the HxGN Smart Sites platform to create a dynamic urban digital twin. Giacomo Benedetti, Head of R&D Projects, Technology Transfer, and Test Before Invest Services at START4.0 Competence Centre, will talk about how this project and HxGN Smart Sites are making the difference in building up Genoa’s twinning, integrating diverse data sources; static, dynamic, and real-time into a unified, multiuser interface.

 

BASF Antwerp – smart site transformation

BASF’s Antwerp plant – Belgium’s largest chemical production site and BASF’s second largest worldwide – has created a digital twin of its 600-hectare facility using Hexagon’s Luciad portfolio, transforming it into a smart site with shared situational and operational awareness. Integrating 25 years of CAD schematics and vast operational data into a single platform, the solution provides a dynamic, georeferenced view of infrastructure and processes across the site. This unified, real-time operating picture enhances safety, efficiency, and collaboration for engineers, managers, and field workers alike, marking a major step forward in digital industrial transformation.

As Head of R&D Projects, Technology Transfer, and Test Before Invest Services at START4.0 Competence Center, he leads cutting-edge initiatives, including those developed through a strong partnership with the HEXAGON Group - particularly Leica Geosystems, Safety Geospatial & Infrastructure, and IDS Georadar. Believing in the value of diverse skills and emerging technologies, Giacomo collaborates with leading tech providers and end users to adapt and implement advanced solutions in underutilised sectors, promoting their cross-cutting adoption and maximizing their impact.
		Dirk Wagemans Vice President for Commercial Industries Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division   Dirk Wagemans is the vice president for commercial industries at Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division. He joined Hexagon in 2012, helping to drive geospatial software sales growth in Europe, India, and Japan and served as vice president for geospatial software in the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to joining Hexagon, he worked in the health, services, and energy sectors. He began his career in diplomacy. Wagemans holds degrees in history, international politics, geography, and management.
