The delivery of Woden bus depot and additional electric buses is part of the ACT Government’s plan to operate a fully zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.
The Australian capital of Canberra has opened what claims to be the country’s largest electric bus depot ahead of full operations at the end of the month.
The Woden bus depot will issue a new timetable and deliver an additional 94 bus services every weekday.
The delivery of Woden bus depot and additional electric buses is part of the ACT Government’s plan for a fully zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.
The depot has 12 modern service bays, a panel shop, tyre changing bay and specialist bus maintenance facilities as well as new amenities to support around 250 staff who will maintain and operate city’s future public transport fleet.
“This is a significant moment for public transport in Canberra, and the people working on the project, that have ensured that Canberra leads the nation in the transition to zero emissions transport,” said minister for transport Chris Steel.
“With this depot coming online we’re now able to increase the frequency of services across our network, greatly reducing dead running and other inefficiencies.
“The new facility has capacity to shelter and support the charging of up to 100 electric buses and will support our growing electric fleet for decades to come.”

Beyond its electric capability, Woden bus depot is also designed to support future solar panel charging.
The expanded service will include more AM and PM weekday peak services for key Rapid routes including the Rapid 2, Rapid 4 and Rapid 10. There will also be more weekday and Saturday services to better connect the growing Molonglo region; and improved services for many local schools.
