Moscow residential district trials NB-IoT

The trial is a partnership between Ericsson and Russian telecoms company PJSC Vimpelcom Beeline

Moscow is running a narrowband-IoT network (NB-IoT) trial in the populated district of Maryino. It will enable Internet of Things (IoT) solution developers to test and highlight the impact of IoT solutions for city residents and nearby services, businesses, and infrastructure.

 

The trial will be run on Ericsson equipment and the PJSC Vimplecom Beeline NB-IoT network. Solution developers can work with partners in the Maryino area to trial opportunities and participants have special SIM cards to access the restricted network. Access is free until the commercial launch, expected by the end of 2018.

 

Uses of the network are likely to span utilities, social services, environmental monitoring, small businesses, and local community and civic organisations. Products can be tested on infrastructure such as schools, kindergartens, shops, and apartment blocks within Maryino.

 

The NB-IoT network (in the 800 MHz - Band 20 band) has advanced IoT capabilities. NB-IoT enables up to 10,000 connected devices per base station. Ericsson has installed two base stations in the one square kilometre trial zone.

 

NB-IoT technology also makes it possible to support sensors or meters that can function for up to 10 years. Such devices can solve specific tasks such as road condition monitoring, high-rise building monitoring, selective collection of air pollution statistics in the urban environment, and data collection from meters. Key advantages include long battery life, improved service coverage area, and low device cost.

 

"NB-IoT technologies open up wide opportunities for the development of industrial and consumer use cases in different areas: smart housing, smart manufacturing, environmental improvement, optimizing of utilities sector infrastructure, road safety and many others,” said Marcus Lindqvist, business development for Ericsson’s VimpelCom account. “The pilot area in Moscow is an important stage in our long-term cooperation with Beeline.”

 

The technology is deployed on LTE and optimised for the low speed collection of telemetric data from meters. The low data speed rate is about 20/60kbps uplink/downlink. The network signal penetrates hard-to-reach places such as basements, water risers, and underground parking, which is beneficial for testing IoT devices.

 

"The pilot zone that we have created is a modern mobile project designed for testing advanced IoT solutions out of laboratories,” said Artashes Sivkov, executive vice president of PJSC VimpelCom. “We are eager to empower business to study, test, identify and eliminate errors in the product by testing it in a real urban environment."
