How cities are achieving sustainability gains

The push for sustainability gains momentum with each passing day, with cities and corporate leaders spearheading transformative initiatives to combat climate change. This week, we’re spotlighting three stories that underscore the commitment to sustainability in cities, from Canberra’s circular economy legislation to New York City’s plan for electrifying its municipal fleet.

1. Establishing a circular economy

Beginning in Australia, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government has enacted legislation to establish a circular economy in Canberra. The legislation aims to keep resources in the economy for longer periods, fostering sustainability and creating more eco-friendly job opportunities. This circular approach builds upon the ACT Government’s earlier ban on single-use plastics, now extending its powers to regulate other environmentally problematic products. Canberra’s commitment to a circular economy sets a positive example for cities worldwide, promoting resource efficiency and environmental stewardship.

2. Electrifying municipal fleets

Meanwhile, New York City is accelerating its journey towards sustainability by passing a groundbreaking bill that formally commits to transitioning its municipal fleet to zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) by 2038. This ambitious legislation, known as Intro. 279-A, aligns with the city’s broader sustainability efforts, spanning government operations, public schools, and City-licensed vehicles. Beyond environmental benefits, this initiative is projected to save nearly $90 million in taxpayer funds over four years. The commitment to electrification represents a significant step toward cleaner and more efficient urban transportation.

3. Call for climate leadership

Sustainability is also front of mind outside of local and regional government leadership, too, as demonstrated this week when over 100 senior executives from the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders united to draft a compelling open letter ahead of Cop28. This CEO-led community is committed to achieving net-zero emissions and has called on public and private sector leaders to accelerate climate action in alignment with the Paris Agreement. The letter emphasises the urgent need for transformative policies that will empower global business leaders to expedite their decarbonisation efforts. By addressing climate change at the highest levels of corporate leadership, the alliance is actively championing sustainable practices and advocating for widespread adoption.
