Seoul launches autonomous night bus
Once pilot data has been analysed, the city plans to establish regular long-distance autonomous bus routes connecting the outskirts of the city with downtown.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has begun operating a late-night autonomous driving bus service.
As a public mode of transportation, the autonomous night bus will accept passengers’ transportation cards, just like regular buses. While it will be free during the pilot service period, it will switch to a full paid service in the first half of 2024.
Dongdaemun Station
The Seoul Autonomous Night Bus A21 begins nightly service at 11:30pm and will operate on the via 9.8 km bus lane route from Hapjeong Station to Dongdaemun Station.
The city plans to switch to a paid service following what it describes as a ‘stabilisation’ process, and subsequently extending the route to Cheongnyangni Station (making a total of 13.2km).

In a separate announcement, SMG has also revealed plans to significantly expand the installation of heated bus stop benches across the city to provide greater comfort to passengers waiting for the bus during the winter season.

The city’s goal is to create a comfortable public transportation environment in winter by increasing the installation rate to 82 per cent this year and as a next stage extending the installation project to centre lane bus stops in 2024.
SMG reports that 92 per cent of riders who responded to the 2023 bus passenger satisfaction survey (approximately 6,000 total participants) gave a positive response to the heated bench installation project.
