Smart signalling technology to be unveiled at CES 2019

Predictive real-time traffic signal information provider, Connected Signals, is introducing a new signal priority system (SPS) for cities and municipalities at the CES 2019 annual trade show in Las Vegas in January. It will also unveil GlobalLight, a smart vehicle technology developed for vehicle manufacturers.

 

Both technologies use predictive data and artificial intelligence to improve safety and traffic flow, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions. The traffic signal information technology will be available to view through in-car demos during CES 2019.

 

Prioritising specific groups

 

The SPS is a smart city technology that lets cities prioritise traffic signals for specific users such as buses, pedestrians and cyclists, to increase efficiency and reduce delays. SPS does not require the installation of special equipment, instead relying on cloud-based servers and cities’ existing traffic management systems.

 

Connected Signals claims the result is a flexible and cost-effective system that can evolve in response to cities’ ever-changing needs.

 

GlobaLight combines traffic engineering, machine learning and information acquired from vehicles to generate accurate real-time predictive traffic-signal information. It brings traffic signals online without using expensive infrastructure or access to city traffic management systems, expanding Connected Signals’ coverage to most traffic lights worldwide.

 

The technology allows automobile manufacturers to bring traffic signal information into connected and autonomous vehicles, assured that widespread coverage will be available.

 

City of Gainesville pilot

 

Earlier this year, Connected Signals and the US City of Gainesville in Florida began work on a pilot project that allows drivers to know when traffic lights are going to change. It forms part of the University of Florida Transportation Institute’s I-Street testbed which trials connected and autonomous vehicle technologies. I-Street was created in partnership with Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT).

 

CES is an annual trade show organised by the Consumer Technology Association which runs 8-11 January at the Las Vegas Convention Centre. Connected Signals will be exhibiting at Booth 6015 in the Tech-East North Hall of the centre during CES.
