The AMBici programme will provide 2,600 units of the latest generation e-Smartbike 2.0 model and will integrate with, not replace, the existing Bicing scheme.
Barcelona is launching an upgraded metropolitan bike-sharing service at the beginning of 2023 in the municipalities of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí and Cornellà de Llobregat.
The roll-out will follow in 12 other municipalities with the aim of providing another sustainable transport option.
The AMBici service has been developed by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), the public administration of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, made up of 36 municipalities. It will be managed by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona and serve almost 1.2 million citizens. A metropolitan subscription that integrates with the existing Bicing bike-share service will be created.
The AMBici programme will provide 2,600 of the latest generation e-Smartbike 2.0 model. As part of the programme, 236 modular parking stations will be installed, half of which will be located next to other public transport stations.
A metropolitan pass will integrate AMBici with the existing Bicing bike-sharing service, which will range between €53 and €65 per year
The bikes have an integrated screen to display the level of charge. The electric motor will stop working at speeds of 25km/h, as well as when the brakes are used. The bikes will also incorporate a geolocation service.
In 2023, the annual pass will cost €25 per year and will allow 30 minutes of free cycling. After the first free half hour with the pass, the cost will be €0.50 every 30 minutes.
From 2024, the pass will cost €40 euros per year and will allow riders to travel for the first 30 minutes at a cost of €0.15. The subsequent 30 minutes will cost €0.50.
A metropolitan pass will integrate AMBici with the existing Bicing bike-sharing service, which will range between €53 and €65 per year.
To integrate the two services, bridge or transfer stations will be installed in the areas bordering Barcelona with the municipalities of l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Santa Coloma de Gramanet.
The project is co-financed with €7m from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.
