Digital twins are among the technologies used by cities to bolster resilience

What are your top priorities when it comes to ensuring your city’s infrastructure is sufficiently robust to cope with the threat of climate change and other urban challenges today and in the future? And what types of digital technologies are you investing in to strengthen it?

These are among the questions we hope to answer with SmartCitiesWorld’s latest survey, being conducted in association with global infrastructure engineering software company Bentley Systems.

Which digital technologies are proving effective?

Artificial intelligence, digital twins, the Internet of Things, big data and geographic information systems are among the powerful technologies that cities have in their armoury to tackle today’s urban challenges. We are also seeing the rise and increased use of emerging technologies such as generative and agentic AI, automated decision-support, federated learning as well as digital twin systems of systems. But what challenges do cities face implementing and adopting them? And how optimistic are you that they will help to achieve your goals?

Ensuring those who live and work in cities are aligned with the smart city journey is a vital part of the challenge so we are interested in how you are using digital platforms to increase transparency, inclusivity and collaboration. The survey also seeks to explore areas such as cybersecurity and examine the role that risk data sources play when it comes to informing resilience planning.

From the outset, SmartCitiesWorld’s remit has been to share knowledge, expertise and best practice on a global scale and surveys such as this are designed to help us, help you.

We will publish the results of the survey later this year and, as a participant, you will receive a copy of the research report. We estimate that the survey should take approximately six minutes to complete and participants will go into a £50 prize draw. To take part in this latest research project, go to How are cities using digital technologies to become more resilient?
