Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) company, Moovit, has teamed with Waze Carpool to introduce a carpool pilot across the US, Brazil, Mexico, and Israel with the aim of empowering commuters to ride together.

According to the partners, the initiative is the first community collaboration of its kind and they have dubbed it “steered by commuters, for commuters”.

Public transit riders

With a reported 500 million users, Moovit reckons it is the platform used most by public transit riders, while Waze claims to have the largest community of drivers offering up their empty seats for a shared ride.

By tapping into Waze Carpool’s extensive driver community, Moovit plans to offer users an “affordable, convenient, and enjoyable commute” with the first ride free.

The company has begun a gradual roll-out to Android users, with an iOS roll-out to follow.

“As we continue to strive to empower people everywhere to get around with peace of mind, Moovit is constantly offering new mobility solutions for its users,” said Nir Erez, co-founder and CEO of Moovit.

“This is the first community collaboration of its kind and it’s all steered by commuters, for commuters.”

How it works

1 Plan the trip: just like planning any trip on Moovit, users input their starting point and destination, as well as the time they would like to leave

2 Find a Waze driver: in the suggested routes screen, among Moovit’s other proposed transit and micro-mobility options, Moovit will display any Waze Carpool drivers matching that route at that time

3 Request a ride: once Moovit users tap on the drive details, they will be directed to the Waze Carpool app where they can request to join the ride and get notified when the carpool is confirmed

4 Get ready to carpool: as the carpool begins, users can follow the driver’s progress to the pickup location using the Waze Carpool app

5 Reach your destination: users can enjoy sharing the road and the costs to get to their destination

“Thanks to this partnership Waze Carpool drivers will be able to connect with even more riders headed their way via the Moovit app, empowering more commuters to enjoy affordable and convenient carpools,” added Aron Di Castro, director of business development and partnerships, Waze.

“By riding together, we can all take cars off the road and help decrease traffic and congestion for everyone.”
