Electric scooter company Bird is building on its partnership with sustainable energy specialist Enel X to accelerate the adoption of integrated micro-mobility options in cities across Italy.

Using the Enel X’s JuicePass app, electric vehicle (EV) drivers will be able to park and refuel at the charging points accessible through the app and continue their journeys on Bird scooters.

Enel X has also announced an initiative to reimagine the future of its business and lead the energy transition in a post-pandemic world.

5,000 scooters

The partnership makes more than 5,000 Bird scooters available for rent in cities such as Turin, Rome, Milan, Verona, Rimini, and Pesaro.

JuicePass users will be redirected to the Bird app to book and use the scooters once the nearest ones have been identified on the map.

At the end of the journey, the scooter must be parked in a safe place that does not interfere with pedestrians and vehicles. There is an initial charge for unlocking the vehicle and a fee per minute.

The solution developed by Enel X and Bird is the latest step in the collaboration between the two companies that was announced last year at the Formula E E-Prixevent in Rome.

“By contributing to the spread of micro-mobility, we are including an additional element within Enel X’s strategy, which aims to continuously spread sustainable mobility globally”

“Our partnership with Bird allows us to offer JuicePass users a unique travel experience within cities and a valid alternative to traditional means of transport, thanks to which traffic flows in our cities can also be eased,” said Alberto Piglia, head of e-mobility at Enel X.

Reimagining the future

Enel X has also launched an initiative to reimagine the future of its business and work closely with innovators, start-ups and SMEs to realise future solutions for the global energy landscape.

ReShape: building a brighter future through Innovability invites proposals to address a number of different challenges in the post-pandemic world. These include ensuring rapid sanitisation in field operations and external spaces, increasing employee safety and ensuring correct distancing and traceability.

In a statement, it said: “Innovative methods to optimise remote working as well as digitalise and automate workflows have the power to make traditional businesses more efficient and create new opportunities to transition towards cleaner energy.

“These disruptive technologies are key to creating a world where we can come together without boundaries.”

Full details of the challenges can be found here. Deadline for submissions is 30 September 2020.
