The 20-mile Metro Express line is the first corridor in Miami-Dade County’s Smart Programme and links Florida City to Dadeland South and features 14 stations.
Miami-Dade County has launched Metro Express, its first-ever all-electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service.
It marks the first corridor of the County’s Smart Programme and links Florida City to Dadeland South. It features 14 stations, stretching from the SW 344th St Park-and-Ride to the Dadeland South Metrorail Station.
A BRT is a bus-based transit system delivering a rail-like experience that is fast and efficient, which includes dedicated lanes, traffic signal pre-emption and priority, off-board fare collection, elevated platforms with level boarding and enhanced stations.
Metro Express connects riders to key destinations including job centres, schools, parks, shopping areas, and other transit services. Real-time bus arrival displays at each station and the Go Miami-Dade Transit app.
“This project is a game-changer for South Dade as it delivers on our promise to bring faster, more efficient, convenient transit options to our residents”
“With Metro Express we welcome a new era of transportation in Miami-Dade County,” said Miami-Dade County mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “The one-of-a-kind Metro Express promises to move more people to more places with greater reliability and comfort than ever before.
“This project is a game-changer for South Dade as it delivers on our promise to bring faster, more efficient, convenient transit options to our residents that will help us reduce congestion and connect people to jobs and opportunity – while at the same time protecting our air quality and our environment.”
The Metro Express system is the nation’s longest battery-electric BRT line, spanning 20 miles along the South Dade Transit Way. It features rail-like gate arms, traffic signal priority, and dedicated lanes for faster, safer trips. Fourteen new signature stations along the corridor feature off-board fare collection, level boarding, air-conditioned waiting areas, wifi, shaded seating, bike storage, and charging stations which offers riders a premium experience at every stop.
“Metro Express represents the future of transit in Miami-Dade,” said Stacy Miller, director and CEO of the Department of Transportation and Public Works. “Every element – from our all-electric fleet to the thoughtfully designed stations – reflects our focus on delivering reliable, comfortable, and sustainable service. This is not just a new way to travel; it’s a new standard for public transportation in our community.”
“Metro Express represents the future of transit in Miami-Dade”
Metro Express advances Miami-Dade’s goals of reducing congestion and carbon emissions while fostering economic growth along the South Dade corridor, home to more than 200,000 residents and 11,500 businesses within a one-mile radius. The system also supports ongoing development of affordable and workforce housing near transit hubs, creating stronger, more connected communities.
The $300m project was made possible through a partnership between Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDoT), and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), each contributing approximately $100m toward the project.
The Smart Plan advances six rapid transit corridors that will expand and enhance Miami-Dade County’s public transit infrastructure to relieve congestion and expand mobility.
